How To Read Mandolin Tabs
Mandolin tablature, often shortened to “tab,” provides a clear and accessible way to learn songs on your mandolin. Unlike standard notation, which uses musical symbols on a staff, tabs focus on showing you exactly which fret to press on each string. Here’s a breakdown to get you started:
The Staff:
- Mandolin tabs typically use a staff with four horizontal lines.
- Each line represents one of the four courses (pairs) of strings on your mandolin.
- The bottom line corresponds to the thickest strings (typically G and D courses).
- As you move up the lines, the strings get thinner (A and E courses).
Numbers on the Lines:
- Numbers appearing on the lines indicate the fret you need to press on a specific string to play a note.
- A “0” on a line signifies that you play the string open (unfretted). This is the most common starting point for beginners.
- Numbers can range from 0 (open string) to higher numbers depending on the melody and the number of frets on your mandolin.
Understanding String Order:
- Unlike guitar tablature, which reads from top to bottom like standard notation, mandolin tabs are written in “course order.”
- This means you play the strings in pairs from the bottom (thicker strings) upwards.

- Bends (w or ~): These symbols indicate that you should bend the string slightly to raise the pitch of the note.
- Slides (glissando): These markings show you to slide your finger along the string to smoothly connect notes.
- Hammer-ons and pull-offs (h and p): These techniques involve rapidly tapping or pulling off a finger to create a connected sound without picking a new note.
- Palm Muting (p.m.): This technique involves resting the palm of your picking hand lightly on the strings near the bridge to create a muted percussive sound.
