The Shamisen is a three-stringed traditional Japanese musical instrument similar to a lute. The player plucks the strings or uses a pick. As it is played, the first string rattles against the wood as it vibrates, adding extra tone.
The body of the Shamisen is usally made out of wood which is thentraditionally covered with cat or dog skin. (also sometimes snake skin). The shamisen is easy to transport as the neck can be detached from the body.
3 main types of Shamisen were developed, being the futozao, the hosozao and the tsugaru. The main difference between them is in regard to the thickness of the body. This also changes the tone and sound of the instrument.
